Black Torrington Methodist Church
Black Torrington Methodist Church - Computer Club
A small group from the village of Black Torrington discovered that the government was publicising grants available to help elderly people get on line. With support and advice from the Methodist/Anglican Rural Development Enabler and Torrington Voluntary Services, they put together a little project based in the Methodist Chapel.
Each Thursday morning they can be found providing free computer training on laptops for up to 20 local residents. They also provide the chance to buy cheap laptops and, with further funding support, may be able to offer bursaries for those who want to continue their training after the initial course.
One local organiser said: “There are a lot of people wanting to have a go in the right supportive atmosphere. The social aspect is as important as the learning.”
And their successes?
“Seeing one lady growing in confidence to the point where she may apply for jobs to use her new skill. And another lady seeing that she will be able to use her computer skills to help her church when she retires.”
The Church also regularly hosts a chiropody clinic, a weekly fiction library and coffee morning .
