Andy Jerrard, Rural Pastoral Worker
2010 saw the appointment of Andy Jerrard as a Lay Pastoral Support Enabler in West Devon. He has been employed from a collaborative funded project across 5 Methodist Circuits. The purpose of the appointment is to reach out to those in need in the rural areas that make up most of West Devon and Torridge. This follows on after some fantastic work done by his predecessor Alan Andrews. Part of his work will be to coordinate a pastoral team across the area so that people can be helped and supported in difficult times. One of the first things that Andy has done is to engage with the farming community where they meet - The Livestock Market. Holsworthy Market is a hive of activity with farmers coming from far and wide to buy and sell their stock. It is also a marketplace used by so many in the service industry to the sector - cattle feed, farm machinery, veterinary product reps all mingle with the farmers. Andy approached the auctioneers ‘Kivells’ to enquire if he could have a recognised presence in the market as a chaplain. So, every week Andy is there in the market talking with farmers and reps, creating relationships and listening to any needs that might be shared. He has also formed a group of local clergy who accompany him on a rota basis to be present at the market. Conversations are very varied say Andy and occasionally farmers are able to open up to share their problems.
It’s early days yet for the project but this is a great step and it is hoped it will grow and develop as time goes by.
